In the late 1950s, a Jewish philanthropist named Mr. Sol Ressler is dying of a brain tumor and has chosen to spend his last years living in a nursing home in Brooklyn, New York. He speaks with Dr. Zimmer about his ideal retirement: He wanted to have time for art and museum going but unfortunately he put himself in this really sleepy life. In the hospital I meet one of my patients who's dream was to be an artist but his wife took away from him because he couldn't support her financially... well what possible happened to her? He said it shattered him because when she left she took his dream with her... and his heart. He speaks with a young couple recently married and their recently born son, who is named Gogol after the Russian author Nikolai Gogol, because his wife wanted to "give him a name that would set him apart from other children." Mr. Ressler bequeaths the family his apartment as a second honeymoon as well as enough money to last them forever. Meanwhile, Ashima and Ashoke Ganguli are living in Rhode Island with their first child, who was born in America and named Gogol. Ashima immigrated to the United States from India years earlier because her father needed a heart transplant for a heart condition he had been diagnosed with before she was born. Mr. Ressler's will states he wants his son Gogol to understand where his ancestors came from and to be "his own man" and free to pursue whatever career he chooses. Upon hearing this Ashoke believes Ashima was Mr. Ressler's first wife and Ashima's parents were originally from India and moved to America with their daughter when she was a child before Mr. Ressler rescued her and kept her on as his "little girl." The family move into Mr. Ressler's old apartment on New York City's Upper West Side, where they live for some time as they get acquainted with the neighborhood and find apartments of their own after some difficulties. After some time, the family moves into the Resslers' old home, which was to be demolished. Ashima's parents take care of Gogol while Ashima (having given up her career as an artist) goes back to her job in order to support her family. The father of Gogol's classmate is a marine biologist studying sea turtles in the Caribbean and Ashoke gets him to take Gogol on a trip where he can meet them and see his grandmother. (The father pulled out of the trip due to social pressures even though it was something he has always wanted for Gogol). On their return, Ashima finds she can no longer work because she needs more time for Gogol. Ashoke is also struggling with financial difficulties, as his wife is about to give birth their second child and they can't support her since Ashima will soon be earning enough for both of them. Later that year Ashima gives birth to her second child. The family has finally found a stable situation with Ashoke's brother working as a nurse's aide and the family's finances are slowly improving. The father of Gogol's classmate from earlier comes for a visit during this time, bringing money from his work as a marine biologist.
